Samsung Galaxy Nexus and Android Ice Cream Sandwich

Samsung Galaxy Nexus

The Samsung Galaxy Nexus and the latest version of Android, Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0, was unveiled at Hong Kong an hour or so ago. The Galaxy Nexus has been buzzing all over the internet for the past few weeks in which even the event had to be rescheduled due to the numerous leaks.

Ice Cream Sandwich - Home Screen

Nevertheless, the Samsung Galaxy Nexus will the first phone to be using the latest Ice Cream Sandwich Android operating system. The Galaxy Nexus phone will have a 4.65 inch Super AMOLED screen with a high definition (HD) resolution of 1280×720, the first HD resolution Smartphone to be released in the market.

Furthermore, the Galaxy Nexus phone will have a dual 1.2GHZ processor with 1GB of RAM. The Galaxy Nexus phone is designed to be button less. The Smartphone will feature a 8.94mm thickness and a “Hyper Skin” back cover which will prevent the phone from slipping from your hands.

Samsung Galaxy Nexus Camera

The Galaxy Nexus phone will have a 5MP rear facing camera which can capture videos at a remarkably 1080p and photos with the new Ice Cream Sandwich features such as time-lapse, panorama and the new photo editing app. To top it off there is absolutely no shutter lag, thus, the ability to take continuous photos one after each other. To add on, the new Gallery App (vaguely familiar to the tiles found in Windows Phone 7) seems to be awesome!

Ice Cream Sandwich - Contact

On another note, all the widgets are now resizable on all the different home screens, something similar to Samsung’s Galaxy S2 Touchwiz interface. The phone will feature “Android Beam” in which NFC (Near Field Communication) technology will be used to share information, data, websites and practically anything between two phones just by placing both phones on touch of each other.

With the release of Ice Cream Sandwich each phone can now have “Face Unlock” which allows users to unlock their devices through facial recognition.

Ice Cream Sandwich - Task Manager

Generally, the user interface in the latest Android operating system, Ice Cream Sandwich, is sleek, refreshing and fantastic! Most of all it utilizes the black color scheme in order to save battery life.

Personally, I feel like Google “borrowed” some of Windows Phone’s user interface especially when you look at their Contacts and Gallery apps.

Ice Cream Sandwich - Gallery App

And before I forget, the new Ice Cream Sandwich will also feature a built in Data Usage app which provides detailed statistics and data on apps which consume the most bandwidth. This is perfect for consumers here in the Philippines where our data rates seems to be ridiculously priced.

In my opinion, we have a game changer here. With the recent release and announcement of the Apple iPhone 4S, the Samsung Galaxy Nexus seems to have won the race by a mile. Apple will definitely see Google as a greater treat in 2012.

The Samsung Galaxy Nexus will be made available this coming November 2011. The price will be hovering around the P30,000 mark ($680 USD).

Now this is a device which I can’t wait for. I have held off my Smartphone purchase for the last remaining months just for this device and I think it was well worth the wait. I can’t wait for this to be in stores here in the Philippines, though, I know it will probably be released sometime in December just in time for the holiday season.

Stay tuned folks! Who wants Ice Cream?
